Living in the mid-west my entire life, I've grown quite accustomed to the winter months and what that entails a far as the cleanliness of my vehicle is concerned. I am going to highlight some common mistakes that can be avoided once applying these useful tips.

Tip #1 - Use warm water, never hot!

Hot or boiling water on glass can cause the glass to crack, especially if the glass already has a small crack in it, hot water can expand the crack. Warm water may be used on the vehicle paint but in general, hot or boiling water should not be used to melt snow and should be kept away from all glass.

Tip #2 - Dress in layers

It goes without saying that if you're going to wash your car in the winter, it will be cold. Knowing this, you want to be sure to dress in layers, with waterproof clothing at the base layers because being wet in sub 30 degree weather will make for a miserable experience.

Tip #3 - Use quality wax or sealant for maximum protection

A good quality paste wax or other sealant like a ceramic coating will add another layer of protection to your vehicle. A good paste wax will be harder to remove than spray waxes and it will have hydrophobic properties, better repelling water, snow, and sludge from the surface of the vehicle.

Tip #4 - Use waterless product or spray

There are products like ONR (Optimum No Rinse) Wash & Wax that can offer a brilliant clean without the need for a water hose or pressure washer. using less water in the long run and leaving less of an opportunity for you to get wet and cold faster.

Tip #5 - Find a mobile detailer

If you need a quick wash but do not want to go into the cold, you can contact a local mobile detailing company. They will typically offer full interior and exterior details, as well as some less intensive, quick washes.

While washing your vehicle in the winter is less than ideal, these tips should help anyone in their car detailing journey and with all the salt and grime on the road, you really want to be on top of vehicle care.
